When in Maui, one of the finest things to do, in my humble opinion, is to do a morning walk. When you start your morning walk is up to you but I can assure you, the earlier the better. What’s early? 7am is perfect. If you embark on your walk any later you’ll encounter more crowds and the temperature will be getting up there. One of the things I love about an early walk is the coolness. There’s also something about the angle of the rising sun that makes an early morning slightly magical.
Booking sites like VRBO and Airbnb revolutionized the travel industry. Their key role has been to bring vacationers and property owners together in a way not possible before the internet (obviously…). As vacation rental owners, we have benefited greatly from the booking site model. Things began to change about four years ago when larger travel websites acquired VRBO. Investors in those booking sites naturally were keen to maximize revenues. VRBO had operated on a subscription model, property owners paid an annual fee to be on the site. That model didn’t excite those investors and changes were made. VRBO with its large market share was able to strong arm their customers, property owners, into paying a booking fee. Why stop there though, why not make renters pay a fee as well. Now VRBO and Airbnb collect fees from you the traveller and the property owner. Property owners can, to a degree, build the owner fees into the nightly rate. The result is that you, the traveller, pay even more.

We have just installed a split AC system into B208. This system provides quiet and efficient AC to both the bedroom and living room areas. The system comprises a compressor on the lanai plus AC distribution in both the bedroom and living room. It’s quieter and more flexible than the previous window unit that was replaced. The system is on a 6 hour timer and is super easy to use. We are sure our guests will really enjoy this upgrade.

Hurricane Lane was downgraded to a tropical storm as it hit the Hawaiian Islands. This downgrade didn’t stop it from causing major damage. The worst damage on Maui seems to have been caused by fires though. Luckily, Papakea was virtually unscathed.
The islands have always bounced back quickly from storm damage, and hopefully, the response to Lane is no exception. At this time, it’s known that record amounts of rain fell. According to the USGS, some parts of Maui experienced up to 24 inches of rain. That amount is dwarfed by the amount dropped on the Big Island where 52 inches of rain fell. It’s hard to imagine that much water.
Fires on the west side of the island burned 2000 acres and destroyed 24 structures including many homes.
We are really blessed to have our Maui condos. We really love it when guests saying tell us how much they love the condo and appreciate all the extras we provide. Whenever we are in Maui, we are looking for ways to improve our guest experience. It could be replacing worn out bedding or adding some new kitchen implement or adding a great piece of art. For example, last month a guest asked if we had any way of making smoothies. We didn’t, even though we love making them at home. Right away we ordered two Magic Bullets, the perfect smoothie maker. Replacing bedding is actually a bit of a big deal. We have stayed in lots of places with worn out or stained bedding and we really notice it. I’m always amazed at how much bedding we toss out.
One of our friends on island is the president of the Kaanapali Golf Association. He has a deal for people that visit regularly and love to golf. I’ll post those details here when I get the info.
We have scoped out many great food destinations on Maui. We try to visit at least a few every trip to the island. We also hear of great eateries from friends. We are happy to share all of these with you.
For casual or quick dining that is within a 5 minute drive or a short walk we love Pizza Paradiso. They have a really good selection of pizza and it’s quick. It’s located a few doors down from Times Market in the shopping center behind Papakea. Another great spot is The Fish Market located at 3600 Lower Honapiilani Rd., about a 10 minute walk north of Papakea. https://fishmarketmaui.com/ . For sandwiches we recommend Take Home Maui located at 121 Dickenson Street Lahaina. They make everything fresh while you wait and they’re awesome. https://www.takehomemaui.com/. The Farmers Market also has awesome, freshly made Acai Bowls. We love them for breakfast. Honokawai Beach Park is directly across the street.
For finer dining we recommend The Lahaina Grill or Merriman’s. They’re both top notch fine dining destinations. We’ve heard that Fleetwood’s is good but have never been. On Saturday and Sunday, brunch at Mala is a must. It’s sister restaurant Honu is also very good. MonkeyPod is good and there’s a new one at the Whaler Shops. Roy’s in Kaanapali is supposed to be very good too. If you’re used to fabulous sushi you can give Sensei a pass. If you’re not, get there early. Same with Star Noodle. If you have great Thai food in your home town, you can miss it. If not, get there early.
Other great spots on the island are Haliimaile General Store and of course Mama’s Fish House. All of the fine dining spots require reservations so book early.
